About neffy®
What is neffy® and what is it used for?
neffy® is an epinephrine nasal spray used in adults and children with a body weight of 30 kg (66 pounds) or more for the emergency treatment of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, to insect stings or bites, foods, medicines and other allergens, as well as anaphylaxis where the cause is not known or anaphylaxis caused by exercise.
neffy® is intended for immediate self (or caregiver) administration in an allergic emergency.
Why should I ask my healthcare provider for neffy®?
If you or your child weigh more than 30 kg (66 lbs) and are interested in an intranasal option for the emergency treatment of allergic reactions, you can ask your doctor. neffy® has a shelf life of up to 30 months and is the smallest epinephrine device available in Canada
Who invented neffy®?
The nasal spray product neffy® (an epinephrine nasal spray) was developed by the company ARS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. In Canada, the product is commercialised by ALK-Abelló Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
How does neffy® work?
neffy® contains epinephrine. When sprayed in the nostril, it works directly on the heart and lung systems to stop the possible fatal effects of a severe allergic reaction that can lead to anaphylactic shock. It improves blood pressure, heart function and breathing, and reduces tissue swelling.
Using neffy®
How to use neffy®?
Remove neffy® 2 mg nasal spray from packaging. Pull open the packaging to remove the neffy® 2 mg nasal spray.
Hold the nasal spray as shown. Hold the nasal spray with your thumb on the bottom of the plunger and one finger on either side of the nozzle. Do not pull or push on the plunger. Do not test or pre-spray; each nasal spray has only one dose.
Insert tip of nasal spray into a nostril. Keep the nozzle straight into the nose pointed toward the forehead. Do not angle the nasal spray to the inner or outer walls of the nose.
Press plunger up firmly until it snaps up and sprays into the nostril. Do not sniff during or after the dose is given. If any liquid drips out of the nose, monitor for symptoms. You may need to give a second dose of neffy®.
Can neffy® be administered to a person who is unconscious?
Yes. Someone can administer neffy® if you or your child is unconscious, as sniffing should be avoided for its administration. Unconscious patients should be placed on their side in the recovery position to prevent choking, and another person should remain with them until medical assistance arrives.
Do I need to pre-test or prime neffy® before using?
No. Do not test or pre-spray neffy® before use. Each nasal spray has only one dose.
Do I need to store neffy® in the fridge or somewhere cool and dark?
No. There are no special storage instructions for neffy®, though it’s best to store it at room temperature. And though you shouldn’t freeze it, if it does freeze, you should thaw neffy® for at least one hour and not use it until completely thawed. [neffy® freezes below -15°C (5°F).]
Can neffy® be used in children?
Yes, but the child needs to be at least 30 kg (66 lbs).
Is there any reason to not give someone neffy® during a severe allergic reaction?
No, there is no known reason why anyone should not use their neffy® during an allergic emergency.
